Youngsters are increasingly logging on to the web at the expense of time spent in front of the TV, a new Europe-wide survey has found.
According to the latest survey from the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA), 12 hours per week are spent using the internet by 16 to 24-year-olds in the UK - up a full hour on last year's figures.
By contrast, TV use has suffered among the age group across the continent: 77% watch for five days or more per week, down 5% from last year.
Internet usage of five days or more now stands at 82%.
An astonishingly rapid rise in online networking was also detected by the survey - with 42% of the continent's youngsters visiting sites such as mySpace and Facebook.
This is up from the 23% who networked online just one year ago.
One crucial reason for the acceleration of internet use is the convenience of a quick broadband connection: around 80% of those polled were found to have already made the switch from slower dial-up services.
A total of 169 million Europeans are currently online, EIAA also found.
