Extra network monitoring from regulators is required in the UK broadband sector, a leading technology data firm has said.
According to Epitiro, UK broadband watchdog Ofcom should rate providers not just on the speed of downloads and uploads, but on the overall reliability and resilience of the service.
The firm was selected by the New Zealand government this week to provide service data for that countries broadband networks - and said that the UK watchdog should follow the example of its equivalent, The Commerce Commission.
Managing Director of Epitiro Gavin Johns commented: "Although consumers and uninformed commentators often consider download speed to be the most important attribute of broadband, it’s just one indicator of performance, as Internet experts know.
"There are a variety of performance indicators that deliver for different types of users…there’s no point having a fast connection if it is not available when you want to use it."
He added: "Broadband performance is not just about speed and it’s great to see that The Commerce Commission recognises this."
