'The death of dial-up' announced

26 November 2007

Dial-up internet connections are swiftly dying out in the UK - and will only account for 4% of connections by 2010.

A new study from uSwitch, released today, also shows that not only will broadband become still more popular among British consumers, connection speeds will also be on the up.

According to the research, 2 million Britons signed up to broadband in the past year - with 6 million more set to make the switch in the years leading up to 2010.

The price comparison service also labels old-style 2Mb broadband connections "so last season" - with souped-up 8Mb services costing, on average, just 5p more per month.

With this in mind, uSwitch Head of Communications Services Steve Weller said that broadband providers should follow the lead of Orange, who recently discontinued its dial-up services in order to speed up switching rates still further.

"We hope it won’t be too long before other companies follow suit," he commented.

"We could then see the demise of dial-up brought even closer than 2010 as these connections are shut down and the decision is taken away from the last reluctant customers -the last breath of dial-up lays in the hands of the internet service providers themselves."
