High frequency spectrum auction announced

4 December 2007

Regulator Ofcom announced details today of its planned auction of a section of high-frequency radio spectrum - which could be used to run new broadband services in the future.

The spectrum will be sold on a "service neutral" basis - in other words, with no exclusions placed on the type of technology which would use it - an Ofcom statement added.

Bands running between 10GHz and 40GHz are to be sold; these are high frequencies capable of sending large amounts of data for comparatively long distances - useful for high-capacity WiFi broadband services.

The Ofcom statement added: "The online auction is part of a programme of making the most efficient use of the UK's valuable spectrum resource by releasing unused spectrum.

"This will benefit consumers by providing access to new services, greater choice and competition; it will also benefit the economy."

According to Ofcom's own research, radio spectrum use in Britain contributes around £37 billion, or 3% of gross domestic product.

A provisional date for spectrum applications from firms has been set for 16th January 2008.
