EU statistics show internet growth

Latest European Union (EU) figures reveal a marked increase in the number of households in Europe hooked up to the internet, with 42% of households surfing the web via broadband.

Research by EU statistical agency Eurostat shows some 54% of EU households are now connected to the World Wide Web, a notable increase from the 49% reported the same time last year.

What is more, the UK is deemed to be above average in the number of household internet connections, increasing by 4% to 67% over the last 12 months.

Of these, 57% are connected to broadband internet, a figure that has climbed 12% over the past year.

The proportion of households with internet connection ranges from 19% in Bulgaria to 83% in the Netherlands.

The survey also considered the age of internet users, showing around one third of men over 55 now use the internet at least once per week, compared to just one fifth of females.
