Apple appears to have made big gains in personal internet usage rates over the Christmas period, analysis from Net Applications suggests.
The web researchers released figures yesterday showing that the proportion of people browsing on the web while using a Mac grew by 0.7% over the December average over the last two days of the year.
Net Applications termed this sharp growth - meaning that around 8% of internet surfers were doing so on a Mac at the end of last month - as "spectacular" and "awesome".
Apple's strong showing was matched by the apparently weakening grip of rivals Microsoft on the web market - usage of its operating systems shrunk by 2% over the course of last year.
Industry website ZDNet.co.uk speculated that the big rise in Mac web usage was driven by the launch of Leopard, Apple's new web operating system.
Since it was made available in October, the US firm's global market share has grown from 6.58% to 8.01%.
