97% of emails sent 'is spam'

9 January 2008

An astonishing 97.02% of all emails sent in December 2007 was classified as spam, a new study from SoftScan has revealed.

However, the huge volume of spam posed more of an annoyance than a security risk to broadband users - as just 0.11% of the mail contained viruses.

The proportion of the junk mails is thought to have been particularly high last month due to many workers taking time off for Christmas.

Commenting on the study, Chief Technology Officer at SoftScan, Diego d'Ambra, said: "Once again the rapid increase of spam throughout 2007 demonstrates that there is not enough deterrent for spammers to give up their highly lucrative enterprise.

"Spam has remained consistently high throughout the month."

Of the viruses sent last December, phishing remains by far the most popular type - making up almost 88% of the total.

Dropper and agent viruses were the next most popular, counting for 5% and 2% respectively.
