BT strikes US network deal

15 January 2008

BT's nascent internet TV (IPTV) service has received a further boost, with news coming yesterday of a new hook-up with top US broadcasters Disney-ABC.

Under the terms of the new deal, BT Vision customers will be able to access hit ABC shows such as Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy on demand.

Around 650 episodes of the various series - accessed either through pay-per-view or through a monthly subscription - will be made available in total.

Dan Marks, BT Vision's Chief Executive, said: "We are continuing to develop the quality and quantity of BT Vision's programming offering and we are very pleased to bring Disney-ABC International Televisions outstanding TV series to our customers for the first time.

"So many of these series, such as Lost and Desperate Housewives, continue to catch the imagination of viewers and media alike and now all these series will be available to BT Vision customers whenever they want to see them."

Jim Brehm, Senior Vice President at Disney-ABC, added: "The flexibility of on-demand technology is ideal for viewers wanting to discover, catch up, or revisit with, these must-see series."

The seriousness with which BT is taking IPTV is evidenced by the recent deals the firm made with Microsoft's Xbox and the Premier League to make content available on BT Vision.

BT is the UK's largest broadband provider, retaining over four million subscribers.
