A new philanthropic foundation devoted to general tech research and educational initiatives has been set up by a top internet registry.
Nominet, which runs the .uk domain, said that it would launch the new charity later in the year - and that it would have £5 million in funding to start with.
The new organisation is to be known as the Nominet Foundation
Chief Executive of Nominet Lesley Cowley said: "Over the last few months, we have consulted with our members and wider stakeholders and received very positive feedback on the idea of creating the first foundation to fund research and educational initiatives in the UK internet arena."
"At the heart of our decision is the fact that Nominet is a not-for-profit organisation - we believe any surplus income should be used for the benefit of the UK internet community."
The precise nature of the new charity's initiatives remains unknown - although industry source ZDNet.co.uk suggested that it might centre on data protection and other security issues.
