BT denies routers' security lapse

23 January 2008

Broadband provider BT has spoken out regarding rumours that its wireless routers were vulnerable to attack.

The telecom said that its Home Hub product did not contain a security loophole which allows fraudsters to access customers' home phone number online.

Claims to the contrary have been made by GNUCitizen, a coalition of so-called "ethical hackers" who posted a blog earlier this week, detailing the apparent vulnerability.

GNUCitizen have even posted a video on YouTube, giving a step-by-step guide to the hack.

Speaking to industry website ZDNet.co.uk, a BT spokesperson commented: "This particular vulnerability was resolved several firmware updates ago and it is no longer possible to do this."

In turn, this was denied by hacker and GNUCitizen member Petko Petkov, who said that the loophole had not been closed by BT and was still "very relevant today".

BT is the UK's largest broadband provider, retaining over four million subscribers.
