Antivirus firms buckle following malware growth

28 January 2008

Broadband users are being hit with a deluge of malware, including destructive computer viruses, it has been suggested.

According to antivirus firm Sunbelt Software, small companies which deal with the hostile programs might soon have to boost their staff numbers - as they are currently being overwhelmed.

The statement also looked forward to a time when more virus combat could be done through an automated process - as it was in the non-automated sector where the strain was being felt most acutely.

Chief Executive at Sunbelt Alex Eckelberry commented: "No longer can a company compete with a few folks in the lab and a group of good programmers…little companies with small teams working an anti-spyware or antivirus product.

"It's hopeless - a small platoon won't win this war. You need a brigade."

Recent research from AV-Test.org shows that malware has grown enormously since the rise of the internet and, consequently, broadband technology - which has made communication between computers much easier and quicker.

The firm detected 564 malware samples in 1986 - and 5,490,960 in 2007.
