In a sign of the increasing use of the internet in Britain to perform day-to-day errands and tasks, Alliance & Leicester said yesterday that online bill payments with the firm doubled last year.
According to the financial services provider, 1.9 million online payments were made through the bank's BillPay website - 70% more than the 2006 total.
The BillPay site was set up just seven years ago - and has grown very sharply in popularity since.
Head of Payment Services at Alliance & Leicester Commercial Bank Graham Long commented: "Our 2007 figures highlight the growing number of…business customers choosing to enable their customers to make payments online - and the increasing number of consumers who are choosing online payments due to the convenience this channel provides.
"The growth we have seen over the last few years clearly indicates that the internet is fast becoming the preferred bill payment channel for many."
Many banks which allow online transactions have developed consumer bill-paying sites - and are developed through link-ups with utility, housing and debt collection companies - along with Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs.
