Tiscali launches 'anti-grooming' software

5 February 2008

Broadband provider Tiscali has announced a software hook-up with online protection firm Crisp.

It announced the launch of a new product, aimed at detecting and warning parents about dangerous online relationships struck up by their children, yesterday.

The new software - to retail for £3.50 a month or £42 a year - will be available to customers by next month.

"Crisp's software is the only technology of its kind in the world and surpasses existing child protection programmes that operate website-locking, blocking and word filters - the technology analyses the content of online conversations to identify inappropriate relationships that are initiated by predators wanting to groom, and potentially abuse, children," Tiscali said in a statement.

"When Crisp detects a potential grooming conversation, it will alert parents by email or text message - however, only the parts of conversations Crisp identifies as potentially dangerous can be seen by parents, which protects young people’s privacy."

Tiscali, which took over rival provider Pipex last year, is the UK's fourth-largest broadband firm.

It retains around two million subscribers.
