Ofcom proposes changes to broadband and mobile bills

29 February 2008

Broadband and mobile customers could find their bills easier to understand if Ofcom's proposals are introduced, it says.

The regulator wants providers to be "clear and up front" with customers and enable them to more readily understand the information on their bills.

It also wants additional charges not included in the price of the main service to be "demonstrably fair".

Specific focus is put on charges applied to customers not paying by direct debit, protection for low income households, charges for late payments and advice specific to contracts.

Steve Weller, communications expert at price comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, welcomed Ofcom's move.

"It will be very interesting to see whether the additional charges are in any way proportionate to the costs incurred by the companies," he added.

The draft guidance will make it clear to communications providers what Ofcom's view of current legislation is and how they can ensure they comply with it.

Once the guidance has been finalised, providers will have three months to comply or risk being taken to court.
