Ofcom is set to release fresh guidelines on charges for broadband and telephone services later this year, something that could mean many consumers are compensated.
Uswitch Telecoms Expert Steve Weller noted that service providers could be hit as possible high charges were for basic products and not for anything consumers have done wrong in the past, reports the Times.
Mr Weller cited recent changes to overdraft charges put in place by the Office of Fair Trading, something that led to a large number of consumers reclaiming cash they believed was rightly theirs.
"If you look at the banking sector, it only takes a few individuals to successfully argue their case to start a momentum," he told the publication.
An Ofcom spokesman added that the outfit will be looking at fees implemented by telecoms companies on people who leave their contracts early.
Last week, Ofcom stated that providers should be more transparent when offering services to customers and that their bills must be understandable.
