Broadband prices 'rising'

5 March 2008

Globally, customers are finding broadband prices are on the rise, according to research.

The latest analysis by Point Topic reveals that average basic prices for DSL, cable and FTTx subscriptions increased slightly in the last quarter of 2007.

This included a slight rise in the price of DSL from $24.43 to $24.54 on the back of a revised pricing policy by Telekom Austria (TA), which raised the price of AonSpeed Start by 30 per cent to $30.16 and increased the service's downstream speed to 1 Mbps.

By the end of 2007 the TA offered the fourth most costly entry level prices for DSL access after Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom and Belgacom and ranked just ahead of British telecom.

Research analyst Fiona Vanier said: "We think that the increases in average prices are significant, but we're not yet ready to call it a trend.

"However without external factors coming in to play it's difficult to see room for further price cuts in the next two to three quarters."
