Economic growth could be given a boost in the European Union (EU) if broadband penetration levels rise, it has been claimed.
The European commission's Viviane Reding, Information Society Commissioner, stated that if such usage levels hit 30% in two years, up from 20%, such prospects could become a reality.
Moreover, greater use of the form of communication could ultimately lower prices and enhance the options available to consumers, Ms Reding argued.
Reforms in the telecommunications market, she said, ought to establish some of the goals that have been laid out.
"The UK, Belgium, Luxembourg and France all had broadband penetration rates higher than the US in July 2007," she commented.
In reference to a previously monopolised market, she added that competition is still "limited" on the fixed-line network, something that could be amended.
Changes to the market proposed by the official include the adoption of a market authority that could lead to improved rules and regulations.
