Mobile broadband 'sees large rise'

2 April 2008

Globally, the broadband industry has grown dramatically over the past year, according to new statistics released by the GSM Association (GSMA).

The firm stated that there are now about 32 million mobile broadband deployments worldwide, while in the opening quarter of 2007 there were three million, reports ComputerWeekly.com.

Many people are deriving the benefits from such services, claimed the chief executive at GSMA Rob Conway.

"We are witnessing the creation of a virtuous circle in which mobile broadband is achieving greater and greater economies of scale, driving down the cost of handsets and equipment," he commented.

Commercial mobile broadband services are now on offer from a greater number of service providers, according to the report. From May last year until this March, there was a 44% rise in such offerings, it noted.

Jim Mather, the Scottish Minister for Enterprise, recently stated that broadband could be improved if agencies linked together.
