Broadband in Manchester 'set to get quicker'

3 April 2008

Faster broadband services could soon by available in Manchester after the council said that plans for fresh services are underway.

In order to highlight the importance of the area as a digital hub, the city council stated that internet speeds 1,000 times quicker than those on the market could soon be created.

Councillor Neil Swannick argued that there could be many benefits for both consumers and business users if these solutions are turned into reality.

"We know that other European cities which are competing directly with us ... are providing fibre directly into businesses and the home, at a fraction of the cost of anywhere in the UK," he commented.

At present a strategy is being drawn up with the intention of bringing together a number of organisations that could help with the cause. Manchester Digital Development Agency is giving help in the initiative.

Recent figures released by the GSM Association stated that mobile broadband connection levels rose last year, something that has lowered the price of equipment.
