Rural broadband claims 'not merited'

Ofcom's report stating that take-up of broadband in rural areas is better than that in cities has been met with shock at one company.

Such insight "beggars belief" and does not look at the market in any depth in terms of the quality of services provided, according to the Country Land & Business Association.

Deputy President at the organisation William Worsley noted that some connections in country environments are too slow and businesses have difficulty finding adequate coverage.

"We are worried that anyone reading coverage of the Ofcom report will get a distorted view of the true picture," he commented.

He also remarked that the "digital divide" still exists and broadband success should be judged on accessibility as it is "simply not available" in many rural locations.

Ofcom recently lifted regulations in areas of the UK where a number of service providers are already operational as this could boost competition, it said.
