New code for broadband firms

5 June 2008

A new voluntary code is set to be created by Ofcom - the communications watchdog - so that advertising of broadband speeds is improved.

The outfit said that broadband providers ought to highlight capabilities of their services with more accuracy and more transparency, reports the BBC.

Furthermore, service providers will also have to offer adequate assistance should the solutions fail, as well as give people other options and informing consumers of running limitations.

Chief Executive at Ofcom Ed Richards noted that the sector is growing all the time in the UK and therefore enhancements should be made to compliment this.

"Broadband is a thriving market in the UK. We want to encourage real clarity for consumers about the actual broadband speeds they can receive," he asserted.

He added that the code is a good place to begin the changes.

Recent surveys suggest that London has the fastest broadband download speeds. By comparison, the slowest connections were witnessed in Northern Ireland.
