Broadband changes 'could be great economically'

9 June 2008

The economic positives of greater broadband coverage could well be large scale, a fresh report has suggested.

Rewards may well be in the region of £16 billion, the Broadband Stakeholder Group revealed, but is added that alterations should not be too rushed, reports the BBC.

A boost to the overall network in the UK would be in incentive for such investments, the organisation claimed, because some areas still lag behind in terms of quality.

Head of the Broadband Stakeholder Group Antony Walker suggested that if the UK waits longer than three years to make changes, this could be a dangerous delay.

But the correct level of planning ought to be carried out, he asserted, so that mistakes are not made.

"It is tempting to jump in feet-first, but it matters more to do this right than to do it now," he commented.

Recently Ofcom, the media watchdog, stated that it has unveiled a new set of guidelines for broadband providers to adhere to.
