Consumers have 'more power' thanks to internet

26 June 2008

The internet is beginning to place an element power back under the remit of consumers, it has been claimed. While over recent times corporations have managed to exploit mass media, said Managing Director of Vonage Vince Potier, online services are more democratic. Because of networking, he commented, consumers now have more leverage and are less open to such tricks, something that might interest those with broadband. Various services have now become easier, from banking to choosing an amount of goods, Mr Potier asserted. He commented: "I believe that the internet, because it is a network and a medium at the same time, has given back that level of autonomy and that level of decision-making power to the consumers." In the past, advertising might have been used in order to take advantage of people, a trend that is being reversed, he noted. In 2007, customers shopping online splashed out £14.7 billion in total, up by 35% on the previous year, according to Verdict Research.
