Ofcom framework 'attempts to offer guidance'

4 July 2008

A new framework has been revealed to try and establish improved broadband services in the UK by regulator Ofcom. Chief Executive of the organisation Ed Richards stated that it will give an adequate level of support to the opening up of these services. Because risks will have to be taken by companies in the sector due to the fresh nature of the solutions, he argued, then clear guidance should be offered. "They need a time horizon that gives them a degree of assurance for a realistic period in the future; that they know for example that the regulator will not suddenly change the rules of the game," he commented. He added that businesses are beginning to engage more in the discussions about newer forms of broadband and this is "excellent". This week Virgin Media was reprimanded by the Advertising Standards Authority for making claims about its broadband download speeds and capabilities witnessed at the busiest times.
