Improved broadband capabilities may become possible after BT said that it is to plough £1.5 billion into fresh technology. The organisation stated that about one million households can benefit due to the roll-out of fibre-optic cables. Such a move is a "new chapter" in the history of broadband services in the UK, BT asserted, adding that the conditions offered by watchdog Ofcom are crucial to its development. Ian Livingston, Chief Executive at Ofcom, argued that the changes can be vital to the form of communications in the future "Broadband has boosted the UK economy and is now an essential part of our customers' lives," he observed. He added that a decent return on investments ought to be seen at the companies who decide to give money to the cause. The Communities Management Association has claimed recently that businesses could suffer unless the quality of broadband is enriched in the next few years.
