BT calls for broadband focus in London

21 July 2008

Following news that it is to set up a £1.5 billion fibre-based broadband network, BT is calling on public sector organisations in London to work together to direct funds to the capital. The broadband provider said London is already a "tremendous broadband success" and the high-speed rollout represents an opportunity to put the capital "on the front page of the next chapter of that story", PublicTechnology.net reports. Super-fast broadband will benefit both businesses and domestic broadband consumers, BT said. Working with public sector partners in London will ensure the provider can deliver fibre-based services where they are most needed. Emma Gilthorpe, BT's director for London, told PublicTechnology.net: "We are keen to partner with people who share our vision for the next phase of the broadband revolution." BT hopes to supply up to ten million homes across the UK with super-fast broadband by 2012, allowing them to run multiple bandwidth-heavy applications such as high definition video and gaming at the same time. Meanwhile, O2 has expressed an interest in investing in super-fast broadband providing certain competition regulations are examined by Ofcom.
