The pledge by BT to deliver super-fast broadband to ten million homes by 2012 demonstrates the importance of speed in today's broadband market, it has been suggested. BT said last week that it planned to roll out a fibre-based broadband network that would provide top broadband internet speeds of up to 100mbs (megabytes per second). Speeds of more than 1,000mbs may be possible in the future, the broadband provider added. According to experts, the UK has so far been lagging behind other developed countries in its adoption of super-fast broadband. But BT's announcement, plus Virgin Media's plans to increase speeds on its existing fibre network, are indicative of a move in the super-fast direction, experts claim. An analyst at Goldman Sachs told Reuters: "BT's plan highlights the importance that it now sees in higher broadband speeds." Public sector bodies have been urged to work together with BT to deliver super-fast broadband in their area. Those who are most keen to collaborate will be the first to benefit from faster speeds, BT said.
