A quarter of the world's computers will be connected to the internet via broadband by 2012, according to a new report. The analyst group Gartner has found that in four year's time some 499 million PCs and laptops will have a broadband connection compared to 323 million in 2007. High levels of broadband penetration in South Korea, Holland and Hong Kong will drive this growth, Gartner predicted. In the UK, the firm expects 74% of computer users to be exploiting broadband by 2012, up from 58% at present. This would take the UK to ninth place in the list of most connected nations. "We expect some markets will have a broadband ceiling at 80% penetration or greater," said Gartner's Principal Research Analyst Amanda Sabia. A separate report from Analysys Mason predicts substantial growth in the take-up of wireless broadband, including mobile internet, with 2.1 billion users worldwide by 2015.
