Customers signing up to Be Broadband packages can check the speed of the internet connection they will receive using a newly launched online speed tester. The broadband provider, which is owned by the mobile phone retailer O2, has introduced the service to provide more transparency around broadband speeds. It hopes that the move will help to reduce confusion among consumers and improve trust in the broadband industry. "With the launch of this speed estimation tool, new customers can check the speed they will receive, rather than the 'up to' that other ISPs provide," said Felix Geyr, Managing Director of Be Broadband. The company said the launch of the speed tester demonstrates its commitment to Ofcom's voluntary code of practice, which requires broadband providers to be clearer about the speeds they deliver as opposed to simply announcing their top speeds. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in June, almost 19 out of every 20 internet connections in the UK were broadband.
