It could cost almost £29 billion to install superfast fibre broadband in every home in the UK, according to a new report by the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG). The government advisory body said that depending on the technology used, the overall cost of deploying next generation services will be between £5.1 billion and £28.8 billion. Fibre to street level boxes would be the cheapest option, the report noted, while point-to-point fibre would be the most expensive. Anthony Walker, chief executive of the BSG, said the new analysis should help to "focus the minds" of broadband providers, policymakers and regulators with regards to the how costs can be managed and reduced. The report also claimed that the cost of installing fibre broadband in rural areas will far exceed those of deploying it in towns and cities. Figures released last month by the Office for National Statistics revealed that in June, almost 19 out of every 20 internet connections in the UK were via broadband.
