Industry gets together to push mobile broadband

30 September 2008

A number of players in the IT and telecommunications industry are joining forces to push take-up of mobile broadband among consumers. Chip manufacturers, PC makers and mobile phone firms are championing built-in laptop technology that will support next generation broadband. They plan to use a newly created service mark that will identify laptops that contain the wireless modules and are therefore mobile broadband-ready. According to reports, the mark will appear on new laptops this Christmas, allowing consumers who want to access mobile internet immediately to choose the right machine for their needs. Commenting on the new technology, Mike O'Hara, a spokesman for the GSM Alliance, told the BBC: "You can go to an operator's store, buy a laptop and it will be already fitted so you can go online instantly. That's a powerful proposition." Telecommunications company Ericsson announced recently that it will be providing mobile broadband modules for use on LG Electronics laptops.
