The UK has a "good track record" for ensuring that illegal content is not hosted on its sites and that broadband users are protected as far as possible, it has been claimed. A spokesperson from the Internet Watch Foundation said her organisation is working together with the broadband industry and the police to ensure that illegal content is blocked. "Only 1% of illegal content is hosted in the UK whereas ten years ago, that figure was 18%," she remarked. She acknowledged that illegal content can still be accessed if it is hosted by foreign websites, but she insisted the UK is a "hostile place" for those who wish to upload or store it. According to research carried out by Nielsen Online, Britons are spending 4% more time on the internet each month than they were 12 months ago, with consumer generated media cited as being responsible for much of the increase.
