Broadband 'has changed the way we seek information'

6 November 2008

The way consumers look for information has been altered dramatically by broadband internet, according to the joint managing director of System Concepts. Tom Stewart explained that the web gives consumers instant access to a vast expanse of information on all kinds of topics. "There was a time where, before technology, you would go to the library and there would be two books on the topic and if you were really keen you could read both those books," he remarked. Today, thanks to the arrival of broadband internet, the range of information people can access is almost endless, he added. However, he said this means that people need to do much more filtering of information in order to find exactly what they are looking for. According to a recent study by researchers at the University of California, surfing the web engages complex brain activity, which can help to boost brain function. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 56% of all UK households have a broadband connection.
