A new code of practice for internet services providers (ISPs) regarding broadband speeds will not necessarily improve the services consumers receive, one expert has insisted.
However, Tom Newton from UK Web Media said it will help to improve consumer awareness by giving them a better idea of what they are getting.
His comments come after Ofcom introduced the code, which requires ISPs to provide customers with a realistic estimate of the connection speeds they are likely to enjoy.
Research carried out by the communications regulator revealed that around a quarter of broadband customers did not receive the speed they expected when they signed up.
Mr Newton said that as well as giving consumers greater understanding, the code may encourage some broadband providers to alter their prices or rebrand "in order to reflect better value for money".
The voluntary code came into force on December 5th and ISPs covering over 95% of all broadband customers in the UK have put their names to it.
Is your ISP giving you the best deal? If not, switch to another broadband supplier now.
