Number of unbundled broadband connections 'increases by 2.3 million'

Local loop unbundled DSL connections rose in number by 2.338 million between the second quarters of 2007 and 2008, new figures show. 

The latest quarterly report from telecommunications watchdog Ofcom show that while the figure was 2.45 million in 2007's second quarter, the statistic for this year's equivalent period was 4.79 million. 

All in all, there are now 16.6 million broadband connections in the UK, according to Ofcom's statistics. 

BT Retail DSL connections are strong, the figures show, claiming a 26.5 per cent market share. Its connections number for the second quarter of 2007 was 3.71 million and increased to 4.39 million in the year to June 2008. 

Ofcom is funded by the government and fees from the industry for regulation work. Although sponsored by several government departments, it is independent of them. 

Its remit includes monitoring television and radio content for offensive substance and ensuring a wide choice is available within television and radio programmes as well as electronic communications services.
