Brits 'refuse to lose' broadband

22 December 2008

As the economic downturn persists consumers are making sacrifices to save money, but broadband is one thing they are reluctant to give up.

According to a new survey by BT, almost six in ten people would refuse to lose their broadband connection.

Broadband access even beat fresh fruit and vegetables as a must-have item during the credit crunch, with 43% of people saying they would refuse to forgo fruit and veg, while 57% said they could not survive without broadband.

Other items coming below broadband on the refuse to lose list were mobile phones, home phones, chocolate, alcohol and new clothes.

Personal Finance expert Alvin Hall said: "Clearly fresh fruit and vegetables should be top of everyone's must have list, but staying connected offers a vital lifeline in this 24/7 society we all now live in."

John Petter, Managing Director of BT's consumer division, said consumers are increasingly using price comparison sites to find the best deals on products such as broadband.

A survey by Alliance & Leicester Savings also revealed that consumers are using broadband internet to make decisions on which savings accounts to open.
