Regulatory body Ofcom has made way for companies to invest in super-fast broadband services, which it believes will benefit firms and consumers alike. Under the plans, next generation broadband will be able to deliver speeds of up to ten times the usual standard, which would allow people to use a number of high bandwidth services simultaneously. "It will deliver significant benefits to consumers and businesses with the prospect of new digital services delivered over the internet at high speed," comments Ed Richards, Ofcom Chief Executive. He adds that it marks one of the most significant advancements in communications for several decades. The super-fast speeds will be deliverable through a range of mediums, including fixed wireless, fibres and cables, the regulator predicts. Ofcom's figures suggest in 2007, Britons spent an average of seven hours and nine minutes a day using an array of communications services - up by six minutes from 2002.
