Broadband customers will soon be able to benefit from "next generation" internet services following yesterday's decision by Ofcom. Speaking to the Guardian, BT Chief Executive Ian Livingston claimed it is now up to broadband providers to concentrate on "delivery" of these new services. The communications regulator yesterday (March 3rd) gave its backing to broadband providers to invest in super-fast broadband services for UK homeowners. Mr Livingston underlined the importance of the decision for ordinary Britons. He told the newspaper: "This is an important step and will allow the market to develop the next generation of the UK's broadband infrastructure, which is so critical to the UK's future as a knowledge-based economy. "The stage is now set for a wide variety of players, of all different shapes and sizes, to do their bit in providing consumers with a choice for super-fast and innovative services." BT recently launched an engineer trial for broadband Openreach customers in London that will enable customers to make out-of-hours service appointments. It is hoped that the new scheme will improve services to customers.
