Broadband speeds 'falling short of target'

5 March 2009

New findings suggest many UK broadband connections do not meet the government's minimum required speed of 2Mbps. According to broadband.co.uk, this is the case for 38.52% of connections, although the average speed nationwide stands at 3.8Mbps. In response to recent plans suggesting all of the UK should be capable of coping with such speeds, Edd Dawson of broadband.co.uk says: "The use of mobile broadband risks papering over the cracks when the country should really be investing in a universal fibre optic rollout." The findings also highlight the problems experienced from network congestion at peak times, with O2 proving to have improved on its January results. Only 10.79% of connections tested had speeds in excess of 8Mbps, the study reveals. A recent Ofcom study found that the decrease in the price of communications services is due to discounts from bundles, lower prices for broadband and bargain-hunting.
