A pilot of 200Mb broadband has been launched by Virgin Media, which it hopes will lead to faster connections for its customers.
The technology used is believed to deliver speeds greater than those in both the US and Japan, with lab trials having so far been a success.
"We're at the forefront of innovation and understanding when it comes to ultrafast broadband services and the 200Mb pilot will give us further insight into how true 'wideband' services might be used by consumers," revealed Neil Berkett, Chief Executive Officer at Virgin Media.
The pilot will involve the provider carrying out regular tests on the applications favoured by users, which include the use of HD services.
Virgin Media has announced that it has over four million on-demand viewings of ITV programmes in March, with Coronation Street and Emmerdale among the favourite shows.
