Non-internet users 'likely to sign up soon'

15 June 2009

A number of people who do not currently use the internet at home are likely to sign up for the service over the next six months, new findings have suggested.

The study conducted by Ofcom found that one in five non-internet users will install it in their homes, with many citing different reasons for not having broadband facilities.

Of those questions, 42% said their main reason for not having it was due to a lack of necessity and 30% perceived it to be too expensive.

"Broadband is becoming increasingly important to peoples' ability to participate in the economy and society," said Ofcom's Partner for Strategy and Market Development Peter Phillips.

A recent report from the BBC found that many areas throughout the UK are incapable of getting the broadband speeds outlined by the government.
