Broadband tax to be imposed on landlines

17 June 2009

In order to allow faster broadband access for the whole country, users will be subject to taxation on their landlines.

The "small levy" will be imposed at a rate of 50p, which will help create a national fund to provide funds for creating better connectivity throughout the UK.

Commenting on the move, Communications Expert at uSwitch.com Jason Glynn said: "The report stated the rest of the funds would be taken from money left over from the digital switchover, but with 95% of the switchover outstanding it is difficult to see how the government could commit the extra funds."

The proposal forms part of Lord Carter's Digital Britain report, which aims to create uniform broadband access in even the most rural areas of the country.

It will also help establish the creative industries as a key part of the UK economy, Lord Carter revealed.
