BT has been cautioned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over a press commercial in which it claims to be the best performing broadband provider. The ASA upheld a complaint made by Virgin Media that the advert was misleading. BT cited an independent survey by Epitiro as evidence for its claim, but Virgin Media pointed out that only ADSL broadband providers had been included in the poll. Cable operators, such as Virgin Media, had not been included, but BT had failed to overtly specify this when making the assertion, it was alleged. "We concluded that, without immediate qualification, the ad was likely to mislead," said the ASA in a ruling statement. Virgin Media made another complaint on the issue of land line charges and the requirement for a BT landline, but this was not upheld. Last week, BT unveiled a gadget called the I-Plate which it claims can deliver faster broadband speeds and improved service quality by reducing interference from electrical items in the home.
