Motorists are being warned to ensure they equip themselves with adequate car insurance before setting of on European roads this summer.
UK drivers need to make sure they fully understand the procedures and levels of protection their insurance policy gives them before they get behind the wheel, uSwitch has claimed.
The comments follow figures from the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) released earlier this week which state that claims made against foreign vehicles by UK drivers have increased by 15%, from around 17,000 to over 19,000, in the past two years.
uSwitch has said that a driver with a comprehensive insurance policy would be "in the best possible position" in the unfortunate event of an accident abroad, having only to pay the excess with no risk to their no claims discount.
However, it went on to reveal that drivers with third party fire and theft insurance would not be covered and would have to pay for the repairs to their vehicle themselves.
Aron Thompson, Head of Insurance at independent price comparison and switching service uSwitch.com said: "Claims for accidents with foreign vehicles are one of a number of factors drivers should consider when deciding on the best car insurance policy. Drivers need to shop around for the policy that meets their individual needs.
"Consumers need to spend time reading the small print and familiarising themselves with what they are entitled to, and varying compulsory voluntary excesses," he added.
