This is almost twice the average price quoted in July 1994 and over £25 more expensive than the previous highest average quoted premium, £777.57, recorded in January 2004.

Premiums for third party, fire and theft cover also rose by 0.12% in the past three months alone, costing the consumer £999.45 on average, compared to the previous price of £954.16.

Mr Sinclair also noted that the buoyant competitive market was encouraging more consumers to shop around for the best deal, but he advised caution when choosing the right premium package.

"As more people will inevitably be shopping around they need to make sure they're aware of what insurers are offering for their money.

"In this environment, competitive car insurance premiums may come at the expense of benefits or high excesses. Making a claim is the wrong time to find that your cover doesn't meet expectation," he warned.

uSwitch.com has plenty of information on car insurance in the UK and can also help you find the right deal.
