A new survey from Direct Line insurers has revealed that more than one in ten young motorists have teamed up with their friends or family to buy a new car to save money and the environment.
More than one in five (23%) 18 to 29-year-olds said they were currently considering sharing their car and the estimated £2,000 a year running costs.
Of those polled who already had a car, 82% said that the environmental effects of owning a car concerned them, with 23% saying that they car-shared in an effort to go green.
In addition, 14% of drivers said that they shared their car with other motorists to help reduce congestion.
"Sharing a car is a great way to save money on costs and to help reduce vehicle emissions as well. It's particularly helpful for younger drivers who tend to pay higher insurance premiums," Direct Line spokeswoman Emma Holyer said.
Direct Line is one of many insurers which now offers named drivers the chance to build up their own no claims discount, as well as providing a multi-car discount for vehicles registered to the same address.
