Motorists are encouraged to either drink or drive in a new poster campaign which targets clubbers and bar-goers.

Random stopping of vehicles to spring spontaneous breath tests has been planned with officers given permission to enforce tough penalties for those found to be over the limit.

Fines, penalty points and even arrests are hoped to be enough of a deterrent to prevent a repeat of last year's figures, which found 9,275 to be over the limit during the festive period. Motoring offences can also cause a substantial increase on the price of drivers' car insurance.

The cost of car insurance varies widely but you can still get yourself a good deal.
