Nearly a third of drivers still flouting mobile phone law

<div class="rxbodyfield" xmlns:o="urn:www.microsoft.com/office" xmlns:st1="urn:www.microsoft.com/smarttags" xmlns:st2="urn:www.microsoft.com/smarttags2" xmlns:w="urn:www.microsoft.com/word" xmlns:x="urn:www.microsoft.com/excel"><p>Research from gadget news and reviews website pocket-lint.co.uk has revealed that nearly 28% of all drivers are still using their handheld mobile while driving their car, despite the new, harsher rules brought in earlier last month.</p><p>Drivers who are caught using their mobile while on the move now face a &#163;60 fine and three points on their licence, but the new punishments - which came into effect on February 27th - appear to have had little effect on nearly a third of drivers.</p><p>If cases reach the court system, the penalties for using a handheld phone can result in a large fine of up to a maximum of &#163;1,000 - rising to &#163;2,500 for drivers of vans, lorries, buses and coaches - as well as possible disqualification from driving.</p><p>Research has proven that motorists are four times more likely to be involved in a road accident if they are operating a mobile phone while driving - resulting in not only a steep rise in their car insurance premium, but also putting their and other people&#39;s lives at risk.</p><p>It&#39;s not just phones which are being targeted either, last week a man was given three points on his license and a &#163;60 fine for eating a sandwich while on the move. </p><p>Police officers told the man that his concentration could not have been fully devoted to the road ahead and that since he couldn&#39;t have both hands on the wheel, he was not fully in control of his vehicle.</p><p>The cost of car insurance varies widely but you can still get yourself a good deal.
