Comprehensive car insurance may not be as comprehensive as consumers would like to think, according to research from Marks & Spencer Money.
Many consumers believe that if they take out comprehensive car insurance, should their car be stolen or damaged to the point of it needing to be taken away, their insurance company will provide a courtesy car.
However, Brendan Cook, Chief Executive of M&S Money, claims that many insurers won't offer a replacement vehicle, stating: "Those unfortunate enough to have their car written off or stolen are left high and dry by most insurers."
Only one in five policies offer a courtesy car as standard, yet 62% of drivers believe their insurer will provide them with one if they are left without a vehicle.
"It's alarming that so many motorists believe that they will get a courtesy car whatever happens to theirs, when this usually happens only when a car is being repaired," said Mr Cook.
Consumers are advised to thoroughly check the policy details before signing up to a car insurer to ensure they know exactly what they are getting for their money.
