The news that Help the Aged is to offer car insurance specifically designed for those over the age of 50 has been welcomed by the price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com.
Help the Aged's policies - to be underwritten by Liverpool Victoria - will become the first real rival to Saga's insurance arm, providing more competition and eventually lower premiums for older drivers.
To be known as intune, Help the Aged's car insurance rewards safer older drivers with a higher no-claims discount than Saga, but it is less competitive in other areas, such as European cover and online discounts.
Aron Thompson, Head of Insurance at uSwitch.com, commented: "While the motor policies offered by intune and Saga are very similar, intune feeds all profits straight back to the Help the Aged charity, which will no doubt appeal to this audience."
He continued: "We always urge consumers of any age to make sure that they look around for the best deal and find the insurance that is most suited to them.
"Older drivers should keep in mind that there are several providers that specialise in this area such as Castle Cover, Age Concern as well as Saga and intune, so it's worth shopping around.
Mr Thompson concluded that car insurance is still a highly competitive market and said that motorists should be aware that factors including where you live and the type of car you drive affect the premium as much as a person's age.
